What Is Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that damages the sheathes of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, whose symptoms may include numbness, impairment of speech, and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, and severe fatigue. Multiple sclerosis happens when your immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect them. Without this outer shell, your nerves become damaged. Then scar tissue forms. The damage means your brain cant send signals through the body correctly. Your nerves also dont work as well as they should to help you move and feel. As a result, you may have symptoms like:

  • Trouble Walking
  • Feeling Tired
  • Muscle Weakness or spasms
  • Blurred Vision
  • Numbness
  • Sexual Problems
  • Poor Bladder or Bowel Control
  • Pain
  • Depression
  • Problems Focusing and Remembering

The symptoms start between the ages of 20-40. Most people with multiple sclerosis have attacks/relapses, when their condition gets noticeably worse. They area usually followed by times of recovery when symptoms improve. For others the disease continues to get worse over time. Studies suggest that vitamin D, which you can get from sunlight may strengthen your immune system and protect you from multiple sclerosis.
